"getting the hang of things"

by Simone McPherson
The other morning we actually got up early! In fact it was five twenty eight to be precise - Goodness and it was still dark too! ...........

HOW MUCH FURTHER? I'LL BE EXHAUSTED BY THE TIME WE GET GOING!
The morning started with the feeding and lunging of both horses to get them loosened up for the trek ahead - and we did plenty of stretching and lunging too, for our trek ahead! mustering ..........

"ONE SHOULD ALWAYS HAVE TIME TO APPLY MAKE UP - TO LOOK ONES BEST FOR THE GIRLS"
By the time we got back, five hours had gone by - Goodness! and we had moved over seventy head of cattle with all their bub-bas - and three Bullies!

Phew no wonder we were "all" pooped!  We mustered one of the back paddocks - called "Jurds".  I did get off Porky twice - I get burning feet? circulation I think, and then I got off again, this time we  all decided to walk for a while to loosen us all up!

Lily-poo, "boinged" trough the tall grass to see where she was going - Hilarious! - but she was absolutely pooped by the end as well as her tongue had grown in breadth? trying to stay cool - Bless her.

THOUGH SOMETIMES YOU'VE GOT TO MAKE A RUN FOR IT!
Maxi boy got left behind as his job was to bring them up once in the yards - that's his "speciality"!

YES! I'VE WATCHED - ZORBA THE GREEK!
Once we made sure that all the cattle were in the holding yard - there is always one who is ............

CATCH US IF YOU CAN! .............
well, who has to make life difficult! for all ...... so after a few choice adjectives by El Ranchero, she was left behind. We pushed the rest of the Mob into a holding paddock before pushing them up towards the yards!

HOME GROWN ROMA TOMATOES AND FRESH BASIL SANDWICHES
AND A ICY COLD COFFEE! YUMMMM.....
But let's go home for a cool down and something to eat now that we are this close! "Yes please" you can hear us all exclaim!.........

So after the refresh - we got the cattle in with Maxi boy! - at this time of day Porky begins to see "Ghosts" and they are everywhere, they are so "dangerous" and "vicious" from what she tells me!

So I am put to work with the limited "horse skills" that I have in trying to convince her that the bushes and the scrubs are not "Monsters" waiting to eat her!! ..... "now girls" I can hear El Ranchero bellowing across to us both - we are not listening we are arguing as to who, sees what!

The following morning we are drafting and marking all the bub-bas! my God the racket! the dust, the heat, the noise! -

WELL DONE MAXI - YOU SHOWED THEM
So  ......we got through all of that, though the cows and calves are not too happy about the whole ordeal.....

I even wash down the horses - cleaned out the stables thanking the horses for yesterday and our trek! while El Ranchero drafts all the cattle ....... it's one of those things that he is better left alone to do.

And then the day had gone! ....... half deaf and and with no voice left, we were both covered in dust and cow poo - I still had a bit of my "going out face" on - White Block-out smeared all over my face looking like a Geisha Girl minus the figure though! with "Hat" hair - you know that hair that is flattened to your head with sweat and such Mmmm ..........

....... and El Ranchero turned and looked at me as we drove home in the semi darkness, the dogs quiet in the back of the landrover, and he said to me "Good day today ....... thank you for your help, you are really getting the hang of things now  ......... " and he gave me that smile that would melt any Girl ..... and this woman too  ........
